Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday announced a major expansion of Karachi’s public transport system, saying a large number of double-decker and electric (EV) buses will arrive in the city within the current year.

He said the new buses will be introduced in phases and deployed across different routes to improve urban mobility and ease commuting challenges for citizens.

Memon stated that the Sindh government is rapidly working on its vision to modernise the public transport network, adding that the expansion builds on the success of the Peoples Bus Service.

He said the inclusion of EV and double-decker buses marks a significant step towards a more efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly transport system in Karachi. “EV buses will not only reduce environmental pollution but also provide cost-effective and comfortable travel options for passengers,” he said.

He added that additional double-decker buses will enhance the city’s transport capacity while also contributing to Karachi’s visual identity and urban experience.

Memon said the government’s initiatives go beyond simply increasing the number of buses, describing them as part of a broader transformation towards a modern and better-connected Karachi.

He added that these projects represent a new direction for the city’s development, aiming to improve public convenience while upgrading its overall transport culture.
