Karachi University bans sleeveless

KARACHI: The University of Karachi (KU) has issued a notification requiring a stricter and “modest” dress code for students.

In a notification issued by KU’s student adviser Dr Nosheen Raza, students have been banned from wearing sleeveless, tight-fitting, or see-through clothing.

The KU has called for the importance of adhering to a “standard of modesty”, urging students to wear clean, nonprovocative attire that respects the academic atmosphere.

The notification said that shorts, revealing garments, casual flip-flops, and clothing displaying offensive language or graphics were also prohibited on the campus.

“It is notified to all students that they are expected to maintain a respectful appearance and wear clean clothes while on campus that demonstrate respect for the academic environment,” the notification said.

Social media users were split on whether such measures guarantee discipline or restrict individual freedom as a result of the decision.

Others have criticised the decision as being unduly restrictive and reflecting traditional cultural values, while several parents and students have voiced support for the new regulations, stressing the need for civility in educational institutions. The policy’s detractors contend that it restricts personal choice and unfairly singles out women.

The university did not clarify how it plans to impose the ban or what penalties students could face for violations.
