Kashmir is world’s largest prison, says KU VC

KARACHI: There is no doubt that Kashmir is the world’s largest prison where people are confined to their homes and deprived of basic amenities. The double standards of global powers and the United Nations have become evident to the world through the issues of Palestine and Kashmir.

These views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi on Thursday. He was addressing Kashmir Solidarity Day organized by the KU’s Office of the Students’ Advisor at the Karachi University Business School Auditorium.

He stated that the struggle of Kashmiris is not for the acquisition of land or territory but is a movement and thought for freedom. He mentioned that those who raise their voices for freedom or against the oppressive Indian government either disappear or are killed.

“International forums, including Human Rights organizations and the United Nations, have failed to uphold the principles they established for human rights. The double standards of the United Nations, global powers, and other international forums have been laid bare through the issues of Palestine and Kashmir, as these institutions have different standards for Muslims and non-Muslims.”

The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi further stated that as a nation, we and our leaders should not be disheartened or discouraged but should always raise our voices for truth and justice. He urged that our leaders advocate for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination at every forum worldwide.

He lauded that the younger generation is raising their voices for the right to self-determination for Kashmiris. He appreciated that the way students and various groups reflected the Indian atrocities on Kashmiris through their speeches, poetry, and documentaries is commendable.

Earlier, Karachi University Theatre and Drama Society performed a play titled ‘Identity’, which vividly depicted the struggle and freedom of Kashmiris and the Indian atrocities they have been facing for a long. It demonstrated that the younger generation is well aware of the rights of Kashmiris and stands with them until their freedom.

The Civic and Social Responsibility Society of Karachi University presented a documentary titled ‘Until When’, while the KU Debating Society conducted speeches, the KU Music Society presented songs, KU Quiz Society held a question and answer session. The event received high praise from the audience. A large number of teachers and students from various departments of Karachi University were present on this occasion.
