Kate Winslet finally joins ‘Lord of the Rings’ after turning down iconic role nearly 30 years ago

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet is heading to Middle-earth nearly three decades after she famously turned down a role in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Oscar-winning actress has been cast as the female lead in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, marking her first appearance in the legendary fantasy franchise.

Kate Winslet was originally offered the role of Éowyn by director Peter Jackson in the late 1990s, shortly after the pair worked together on Heavenly Creatures.

However, Winslet declined the part because the trilogy required several years of filming in New Zealand. The role eventually went to Miranda Otto, whose performance became one of the standout moments of the series.

Kate Winslet’s long-awaited Middle-earth debut

Now, nearly 30 years later, Winslet will finally enter the world of The Lord of the Rings in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to arrive in cinemas on December 17, 2027.

The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his role as Gollum.

Peter Jackson will return as a producer, bringing another key figure from the original trilogy back into the franchise.

Mystery surrounds Winslet’s role

Warner Bros. has not yet confirmed which character Winslet will portray in the upcoming film, but speculation is already building among fans.

One theory suggests she could play Gilraen the Fair, the mother of Aragorn, whose story aligns with the timeline of the film.

Another possibility is that Winslet could portray a character connected to the early life of Sméagol before he became Gollum.

There is also speculation that the filmmakers may introduce a completely new character created specifically for the film.

A reunion decades in the making

Winslet’s casting also reunites her with Peter Jackson nearly three decades after Heavenly Creatures helped launch her career.

Since then, the actress has become one of Hollywood’s most respected performers, winning an Academy Award for The Reader and earning acclaim for films including Titanic and Revolutionary Road, as well as the HBO series Mare of Easttown.

What we know about The Hunt for Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will take place during the 17-year gap between Bilbo’s birthday party and the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.

The story follows the hunt for Gollum as Gandalf and Aragorn attempt to track him down before Sauron learns the truth about the One Ring.

Ian McKellen is expected to return as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood may also reprise his role as Frodo Baggins.

Production on the film is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in May 2026.
