Katy Perry has taken her first clear public political stance, urging her followers to take action against United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement as her relationship with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau continues to draw attention.
The pop star shared a series of posts on Instagram calling on Americans to contact their senators and oppose additional funding for ICE, writing that it was time to “turn anger into action”.
The message was posted two days after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by a US Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis.
What Katy Perry shared
In a post seen by her more than 200 million followers, Perry shared six slides with instructions on how to call US senators.
One slide read, “Who: You, the power is in your hands”, while another stated, “What: Call your senators”.
A further slide said there was a limited window to block an additional $10 billion in funding for ICE, on top of existing allocations. Perry also shared a phone number and encouraged people to contact lawmakers directly.
The message and its context
Perry also included a suggested script for callers, which urged senators to block an upcoming homeland security appropriations bill.
The script criticised ICE enforcement practices and warned lawmakers that their votes would be remembered. It ended by asking senators to “do the right thing”.
The singer joins several other public figures who have spoken out following unrest in Minnesota, including Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Rodrigo, Stephen King, Kathy Griffin and Cynthia Nixon.
Romance with Justin Trudeau
Perry’s comments come amid her relationship with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
The pair first sparked dating rumours in July and went public with their romance in December. Last week, Perry appeared alongside Trudeau at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Trudeau announced his separation from his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023 after 18 years of marriage.
Personal background
Perry, whose real name is Katheryn Hudson, split from longtime partner Orlando Bloom in early 2025. The former couple share a daughter, Daisy Dove.
Bloom also has a son from his previous marriage to Miranda Kerr. Perry was previously married to comedian Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012.
