Key PML-N figures grace wedding ceremony of Nawaz’s devotee

LAHORE/LONDON: Esteemed figures from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), including former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, participated in the matrimonial celebration of Ibrahim Tariq Shafi in Lahore.

The event, which marked the union of Nawaz’s loyalist Tariq Shafi’s son, saw the attendance of various prominent personalities, The News reported.

Ibrahim Tariq Shafi, a graduate from the London School of Economics (LSE) and the current overseer of the Ittefaq Group of Companies, was the focal point of the joyous occasion. During the festivities, Nawaz Sharif fondly reminisced about the steadfast loyalty demonstrated by Tariq Shafi during challenging periods.

Among the distinguished guests were the interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman, and other notable individuals.

Tariq Shafi, a renowned industrialist and cousin to Nawaz Sharif, endured almost four years in exile in London. The Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT) sought his testimony against Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield case, given his role as the former CEO of the Gulf Steel Mill in Dubai during the 1970s.

Shafi’s sojourn in London, spanning nearly four years, included stays in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Following the assumption of power by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), multiple extradition requests were submitted to the UK government. Shafi, who provided evidence of the correspondence with the Home Office, resisted pressure to return to Pakistan.

In 2019, London witnessed a meeting between Shafi and representatives of the establishment, extending an offer for him to turn against Nawaz Sharif for personal gain. Unyielding, Shafi declined the proposal. He eventually repatriated to Pakistan in April 2020, meeting an untimely demise due to cardiac arrest in Murree on June 28, 2021.
