Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland has been arrested after allegedly assaulting and threatening a ride-share driver in Hollywood, police said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle, physically assaulted the driver and made criminal threats during the incident, which took place at around 00:15 local time on Monday.

The victim was not injured, police added.

Sutherland, 59, was released after posting a bond of $50,000, or about £37,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on 2 February. The BBC said it had contacted his representatives for comment.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue and is being investigated by the LAPD’s Hollywood Division.

Sutherland is best known for playing counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer in Fox’s 24 and the US president in Designated Survivor. He is the son of the late actor Donald Sutherland.

The actor has had several run-ins with the law in the past. In 2007, he was sentenced to 48 days in jail for driving under the influence and violating probation.

He was arrested on an assault charge in 2009, though the case was later dropped. In 2020, he was also arrested following an illegal U-turn in Hollywood.
