PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has imposed a 60-day ban under Section 144 on illegal mining and placer gold extraction along the Indus River and Kabul River in several districts of the province, citing environmental damage and security concerns.
According to an official notification issued by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department, the ban has been imposed in the districts of Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat and Karak, as well as adjoining areas.
The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Ikramullah Khan, said the decision was taken in light of reports from relevant departments and consultations held during the 37th meeting of the provincial cabinet.
Authorities said that illegal mining activities along riverbanks were causing severe environmental degradation, polluting water, destroying natural landscapes and posing risks to the health and safety of local communities.
The government also expressed concern that such activities could lead to law and order problems, disputes among local groups, the transportation of illegally extracted material and the smuggling of fuel used in excavation.
Officials warned that some organised groups involved in illegal mining possess financial resources and could resist enforcement actions, potentially endangering the lives of civilians and law enforcement personnel.
The provincial cabinet has also directed the Mines and Minerals Department to launch coordinated operations against illegal mining, with the help of district administrations and police.
Under the order, district authorities and police have been granted full powers to take action in accordance with the law, including the seizure of machinery, vehicles and equipment used in violations.
Officials warned that those found violating the ban would face legal action under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code.
