PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has given formal approval to elevate the Special Branch of the police into a regular, specialised unit and separate cadre, marking one of the most significant structural reforms in the province’s policing system in recent years.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, where officials reviewed the operational needs and future roadmap of the intelligence-focused wing. The meeting granted in-principle approval for the creation of 1,221 new posts within the Special Branch, aimed at expanding its capacity and strengthening intelligence gathering across the province.
To support this transition, the chief minister approved a substantial financial package, including Rs 1,820 million for infrastructure development, Rs 904.7 million for the procurement of motor vehicles, 98 vehicles and 404 motorcycles to be provided on a priority basis, and Rs 2,543.9 million allocated for advanced technical equipment and technology upgrades
Officials said the funds will enhance field intelligence, surveillance, and analytical operations, capabilities critical to counter-terrorism efforts. Chief Minister Afridi spoke on the pivotal role of the Special Branch in maintaining provincial security.
“The Special Branch is a key pillar of our police force in the fight against terrorism,” he said. “All human and technical resources will be provided on a priority basis to strengthen its operations.”
He also directed relevant departments to submit the proposed Special Branch allowances for swift approval, ensuring that personnel receive revised compensation aligned with their enhanced responsibilities.
The meeting further approved the construction of new purpose-built facilities for the Special Branch as part of the broader modernisation plan. The upgrades are expected to significantly bolster intelligence capabilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid evolving security challenges.
