KP govt approves textbook reforms

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has given the green light to the recommendations proposed by the reform committee concerning textbooks, marking a significant stride in educational reforms within the province.

In a noteworthy development, government schools in Peshawar are set to publish free textbooks for students from nursery to the class three, as announced by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education Department.

The announcement further outlined that a substantial 80 per cent of the books for the 4th and 5th classes for the academic years 2024 and 2025 will be made available free of charge. Additionally, 20 per cent of the textbooks for these classes will be sourced from existing materials.

Moving up the educational ladder, the government disclosed that 50 per cent of the books for students of 6th to 12th classes will be published without any cost to the students, while the remaining 50 per cent will be sourced from existing textbooks.

To facilitate the implementation of this initiative, school principals have been entrusted with the responsibility of collecting old books from students. Moreover, concerned officers will actively encourage students to maintain their textbooks in good condition.

In a bid to streamline the educational process, the government announced that the size of textbooks will be reduced, effective from the academic years 2025 and 2026. Importantly, this reduction in size will be executed without any alterations to the existing syllabus.

Furthermore, as part of the modernisation efforts, teachers and other school staff will transition to using soft copies of books. This move aims to embrace digital learning tools and promote a more sustainable and efficient approach to education.
