LAFC eye longer shutout run as Orlando’s leaky defence faces stern test

WEB DESK: Los Angeles FC will aim to stretch their record-breaking shutout streak when they host Orlando City on Saturday.

LAFC have made a flawless start to the season, going five matches unbeaten without conceding a single goal. Their 450-minute clean sheet run is now the longest at the start of an MLS campaign, with the side scoring eight times in that span.

The packed schedule has also seen LAFC juggle continental commitments, playing nine matches in 33 days. They return to CONCACAF Champions League action on Tuesday against Cruz Azul in the quarter-final first leg.

Head coach Marc Dos Santos said the international break allowed his side to reset, but warned against underestimating Orlando.

“Because they struggled early in the season, it’s a red alert for us not to drop our guard,” he said, adding that opponents could come with tactical changes after the break.

Orlando, meanwhile, have endured a difficult start, conceding a league-high 17 goals in five matches.

Under interim coach Martin Perelman, they managed a 2-1 win over CF Montreal before suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat to Nashville SC.

Midfielder Eduard Atuesta said the team is adapting to changes, including injuries and a new coaching setup.

“This is a process with a lot happening at the same time,” he said. “We have to keep working and trust what we are building.”

Atuesta is expected to return after a thigh injury, while defenders Griffin Dorsey, Robin Jansson and David Brekalo remain doubtful for the clash.
