LAHORE: After the recent rain spells, Lahore has stepped off the list of the world’s top 10 most polluted cities, but its air quality remains a concern, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 158.
The city, along with several other in Pakistan’s biggest province Punjab, had been under a month-long smog emergency since early November.
Smog – a combination of smoke and fog – is a specific phenomenon that occurs when certain pollution particles mix with cold, moist air and hang close to the ground, reducing visibility.
The highest AQI recorded in Lahore was 258 in DHA Phase 8. Areas like Quaid-e-Azam Highway and Shimla Pahari Chowk also experience significant pollution.
Karachi, on the other hand, ranks second among the most polluted cities globally, with an AQI of 183.
Despite a decrease in fog and a steady cold intensity compared to the previous day, Lahore still feels chilly, with a morning temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature is expected to reach 15 degrees Celsius today, with a high humidity ratio of 95%. The weather forecast predicts cold and dry conditions for the next 24 hours.
