Lahore traffic police arrest 248 underage drivers

LAHORE: Lahore’s traffic police have arrested, 248 underage drivers in the past 24 hours. The action has been taken in response to a devastating accident that claimed the lives of six family members, including infants and women.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) to issue a stern warning to parents about the dangers of allowing their children to drive.
The crackdown, initiated after a fatal incident on Saturday, involved setting up roadblocks at crucial locations to apprehend underage drivers. The police have been instructed to impound vehicles and motorcycles driven by underage individuals, in addition to issuing tickets.
The CTO said that a case would be registered against underage drivers instead of a mere challan. This move is aimed at deterring parents from permitting their children to operate vehicles illegally.
Notably, the tragic accident occurred in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 area when a teenage boy, allegedly driving recklessly—a common practice among affluent children in the region—collided with the victims’ car near a roundabout. The impact was so severe that the vehicle overturned, resulting in the loss of six lives.

In light of this incident and the broader issue of underage driving, the traffic police have issued over 22,000 challans against young drivers this year. The CTO’s directive to all circle and sector in-charges underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety of road users by taking strict measures against underage driving.
