LAHORE: Authorities have issued a strong public advisory after a rise in fake e-challan SMS reports, urging citizens to stay alert and avoid falling victim to fraudsters exploiting the name of Punjab Safe City.
Complaints have poured in from residents who say they received suspicious messages claiming to be traffic violation notices, often containing links designed to extract money or personal information.
A Punjab Safe City spokesperson clarified that the authority never asks for cash payments, bank details, or account information through SMS under any circumstances. The spokesperson stressed that official e-challan messages are sent only from the Punjab government’s verified number 8070, and contain complete details of the violation, including time, location and nature of the offense. Anything outside this format, officials said, should be treated with extreme caution.
Fraudsters have reportedly been circulating deceptive links that redirect recipients to fake payment portals, attempting to extort money by creating a sense of urgency. “Citizens should never pay through any suspicious link, SMS, or website,” the spokesperson said, adding that all Safe City services remain completely free for the public.
Authorities have urged anyone who receives a dubious or fake message to immediately contact 15 or report the matter to the FIA Cyber Wing for investigation. Officials warned that strict action will be taken against individuals or groups involved in exploiting citizens under the guise of Safe City operations.
