Last day for independent candidates to align with political parties

independent candidates

Today marks the final call for candidates to decide their political affiliations, with the clock ticking down to midnight for independent hopefuls.

As per constitutional provisions, these candidates have until midnight to decide their political fate, with an option to join any parliamentary party within three days after the Election Commission of Pakistan’s notification. Failure to do so will cement their status as independents.

The Election Commission Facilitation Center stands ready to assist candidates in this pivotal decision, with operations set to continue until midnight.

Independent candidates must furnish an affidavit along with a letter from the respective party chief, solidifying their commitment. Simultaneously, political entities can submit lists of candidates along with corresponding affidavits to the Election Commission.

In a notable development, a significant number of independent candidates have already cast their lot with established political entities. Specifically, 82 victorious independent candidates from National Assembly constituencies have chosen to align themselves with the Sunni Ittehad Council, while nine successful independents from Sindh Assembly seats have pledged allegiance to the Sunni Ittehad Council.

Constitutional experts shed light on the implications of such alliances, emphasizing that even joining a relatively minor parliamentary faction can bolster numerical strength and unlock reserve seats for women or non-Muslim representatives in the National Assembly.

Furthermore, the constitution of Pakistan grants independent candidates a pivotal role in the parliamentary process. They retain the authority to sway the selection of the Prime Minister, also known as the Leader of the House, within the Lower House of Parliament, regardless of their party affiliation.

As the deadline approaches, the political landscape braces for potential realignments and strategic maneuvers, with independent candidates holding the keys to parliamentary dynamics.
