Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai, her family confirmed on Sunday. Her son Anand Bhosle said she passed away earlier in the day and that final rites will be held the following Monday in the city.

Doctors at Breach Candy Hospital stated the veteran artist died after suffering multi-organ failure. She had been admitted on Saturday evening after experiencing severe fatigue and a chest infection, according to medical updates shared by the hospital.

Family members had earlier informed the public that her condition required hospital care and requested privacy during treatment. Her granddaughter noted in a social media message that she was under medical supervision and hoped for recovery, while thanking supporters for their concern.

Born in 1933, Bhosle began her singing career and rose to prominence in the 1950s. Over an extraordinary career spanning more than eight decades, she became one of the most versatile voices in Indian music, recording thousands of songs across multiple languages, including film music, ghazals, folk, pop, and classical styles.

She received numerous honors, including India’s Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. In 2011, Guinness World Records recognised her as the most recorded artist in music history. Her influence shaped generations of singers and redefined female playback singing in Indian cinema.

News of her death prompted widespread mourning, with tributes pouring in from fans and figures in the entertainment industry. She is remembered for her remarkable range and lasting impact on South Asian music.
