WEB DESK: Valentino Garavani, the iconic Italian couturier whose glamorous gowns adorned royals, first ladies, and Hollywood stars for nearly five decades, has passed away at the age of 93.
Known worldwide simply as Valentino, he was celebrated for his signature “Valentino red” dresses and intricate designs that blended elegance with femininity.

A Star-Studded Legacy
Valentino’s creations graced generations of high-profile women, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Diana, Princess of Wales, Julia Roberts, and Queen Rania of Jordan. From the Oscars to private celebrations, his gowns became synonymous with red-carpet perfection.

Beyond red, his designs featured lace, ruffles, bows, and embroidery, bringing glamour and sophistication to every wearer. His atelier in Rome became a hub for the world’s elite, while he maintained close friendships with celebrities and fashion icons alike.
From Milan to Global Fame
Born in Voghera, Italy, in 1932, Valentino’s love for cinema and beauty inspired his journey into fashion. After studying in Milan and Paris, he launched his namesake house in 1959 on Rome’s Via Condotti.
With business partner Giancarlo Giammetti handling operations, Valentino quickly rose to international fame, dressing icons such as Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn, cementing his reputation as a designer of timeless elegance.

A Lasting Influence
Valentino retired in 2008 after a glittering career, leaving behind a fashion house that continues to thrive under creative directors like Alessandro Michele and Pierpaolo Piccioli. His legacy extends beyond clothing, through his foundation and public influence, Valentino remains a symbol of Italian haute couture. A public viewing will be held this week at the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation, with a funeral service scheduled at Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri.
And to add some twist, the very dress worn by Brooklyn Beckham’s wife Nicola Peltz designed by Valentino has become a site for clash between the Beckhams.
