LESCO halts solar green meter installations, affecting thousands of users

LAHORE: Solar energy consumers in Pakistan are encountering a temporary setback as Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has suspended the installation of solar green meters following new directives from the Ministry of Energy.

LESCO confirmed that the suspension affects both residential and industrial users, putting a pause on efforts by households and businesses to switch to cleaner, cost-saving solar solutions. While the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had previously approved the deployment of these green meters, the Energy Ministry’s latest instructions have put all new installations on hold.

Officials indicate that the freeze could last anywhere from one to two months, depending on the development and approval of a revised solar green meter policy. Until such guidance is issued, no new meters will be installed.

The pause is not limited to LESCO. Reports suggest that all major electricity distribution companies across the country have temporarily stopped issuing new solar connections. Energy experts warn that this could slow down Pakistan’s renewable energy adoption at a critical time, as more consumers and industries look to reduce reliance on grid electricity and rising power costs.

Consumers are being urged to stay informed through official channels and hold off on planning new solar installations until the Ministry of Energy provides updated regulations and guidelines.
