Smog in Lahore

LAHORE: In a recent session at the Lahore High Court (LHC), heard a case concerning the remediation of smog in the region. Justice Shahid Karim presided over the proceedings.

One of the key questions posed during the hearing was the number of projects initiated in the past month. Justice Shahid Karim inquired about this, prompting a response from an Advocate representing the Punjab Government. According to the Advocate, a total of five projects are currently underway.

Specific attention was given to the ongoing project in Shahdara, with the lawyer for the Punjab Government assuring the court that this endeavor would be completed in the near future.

However, the issue of the Niazi Interchange to Babu Sabu project sparked a debate in the courtroom. Justice Shahid Karim initially advised against starting work on this project. Nevertheless, the court eventually ruled to commence work on the Niazi Interchange to Babu Sabu project in February, indicating a shift in their stance.

The court delved deeper into the potential impact of these projects on air quality, with Justice Shahid Karim questioning the government lawyer on this matter. The court requested that the government provide detailed information regarding the project’s impact based on collected data at the next hearing.

LHC halts LDA’s projects amidst worsening smog situation

Environmental concerns extended beyond the specific projects discussed, as the Judicial Water and Environmental Commission emphasised that no construction projects should be initiated during the smog season. The court agreed with this proposition, acknowledging the importance of mitigating environmental factors.

Justice Shahid Karim also raised concerns about other roads, including Jail Road, suggesting the need for alterations such as the placement of U-turns on roads.

Furthermore, the LHC emphasised the importance of water conservation, urging the implementation of water treatment plants in the construction of 10-marla houses. The court directed the relevant parties to formulate and submit a proposal for this initiative in the upcoming hearing.

It is notable that LHC had barred LDA from continuing projects amidst worsening smog situation.
