LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday extended a lifeline to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President and former Punjab Chief Minister, Parvez Elahi, by granting him bail in a contentious case involving purportedly illicit appointments.

Elahi, who stands accused of orchestrating unlawful recruitments within the Punjab Assembly, appeared before Justice Shehram Sarwar to plead his case.

The court, in its ruling, allowed Elahi’s release upon the submission of a surety bond worth Rs100,000, marking a significant legal maneuver in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the PTI stalwart.

Elahi is among several PTI leaders and workers who had been arrested amid the crackdown on the PTI leadership following the violent riots in the country after the former prime minister’s first arrest on May 9.

Since June 1, Elahi has faced multiple arrests in various cases, with his most recent detention occurring on September 18 by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE).

According to the details provided by an ACE spokesperson, Elahi made 12 illegal recruitments in the Punjab Assembly on grade 17 positions.

The candidates were recruited in the provincial assembly by altering the records.
