Lindsey Vonn has revealed she suffered a complex fracture to her tibia that will require multiple surgeries after crashing during the downhill event at the Winter Olympics.
In a post shared on Instagram on Monday, the 41-year-old said the injury occurred after a small error on her racing line during the run.
“I was simply five inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate, twisting me and resulting in my crash,” Vonn wrote. She added that the incident was not linked to previous injuries, including a torn ACL in her left knee that she sustained nine days earlier in another crash.
Despite the severity of the injury, Vonn said she had “no regrets” about competing.
“Knowing I stood there having a chance to win was a victory in and of itself,” she wrote. “I also knew that racing was a risk. It always was and always will be an incredibly dangerous sport.”
Vonn was airlifted from the course in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Sunday and taken to hospital in Treviso, Italy. A hospital statement said she underwent surgery on her left leg and was in stable condition.
Her father, Alan Kildow, earlier suggested the crash could mark the end of her career. Speaking to the Associated Press, he said there would be “no more ski races” for Vonn if he had any influence over the decision.
Kildow said Vonn’s family, including her siblings, had been with her during treatment and confirmed she would not return to the Games to support teammates.
The US Ski Team later said Vonn remained in stable condition as she prepares for further treatment.
