Australia have elected to bowl first in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval as they chase a series-clinching win, while India fight to keep the contest alive after a rain-hit opener in Perth. With clear skies and batting-friendly conditions in South Australia, a capacity crowd is set for a high-scoring spectacle under lights.
Mitchell Marsh won the toss and sent India in, banking on his pace attack, led by Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, to replicate their ruthless display from the first game. Hazlewood, who ripped through India’s top order in Perth, has another opportunity to firm his case ahead of the Ashes summer.
Adam Zampa and Alex Carey return to the Australian XI, bolstering both experience and balance. Carey replaces Josh Philippe behind the stumps, while Zampa’s inclusion adds spin variety on a surface expected to offer little turn.
India, meanwhile, have resisted major changes despite their batting collapse in the opener. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both subdued in Perth, will be desperate for a statement performance to silence growing chatter about India’s one-day form. Shubman Gill, captaining the ODI side for the first time, has again backed his top order to deliver on a ground where India have not lost to Australia since 2008.
The visitors have opted for Prasidh Krishna in place of Harshit Rana, hoping for extra movement with the new ball. The big decision in the spin department remains Washington Sundar retaining his spot over Kuldeep Yadav – a bold call on a small ground that traditionally rewards big hitters more than spinners.
There’s plenty at stake for both sides. Australia, riding momentum and home advantage, can seal the series with a win today, while India must find their rhythm quickly to force a decider in Hobart.
There’s more to watch for in today’s game than just which team wins today. For instance, if Travis Head scores 50 runs, he’ll be at the 3000 ODI runs mark. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli needed 54 runs to surpass Kumar Sangakkara and move to second on the all-time ODI runs list – but he will have to wait for that now. And perhaps most interesting of them all, Mitchell Starc is just five wickets short of 250 in the format, aiming to join legends Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, and Shane Warne.
For now, India is 2 wickets down in 12 overs, for a total of 37 on the board. Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer are keeping it steady for now.
