M-Tag crackdown begins in Islamabad after registration deadline ends

M-Tag crackdown begins in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Islamabad have begun stopping vehicles without M-Tags following the expiry of the registration deadline, officials said on Friday.

They said that M-Tag readers have been activated at 12 key entry points across Islamabad to prevent unregistered vehicles from entering the city.

They said that the measure is part of efforts to improve traffic management and ensure compliance with regulations.

Director General of Excise Bilal Azam urged motorists to have their M-Tags installed immediately to avoid fines or inconvenience.

To facilitate the public, he said, 16 service centres have been set up across the city, with two locations at 26 Number Chungi and 17 Meel toll plazas operating 24 hours a day.

He said that additional counters at Kachnar Park, Sector I-8, and Sector F-9 Park will remain open until midnight.

The initiative is being implemented in coordination with the DG Safe City, the Chief Traffic Officer, and SSP Operations, who inspected the checkpoints to ensure readiness.

Authorities have warned that no exceptions would be made for vehicles without M-Tags.

The M-Tag system was introduced to modernize traffic management and toll collection in Islamabad while providing a streamlined and convenient service for commuters.

Officials said that the M-Tag process is simple, requiring only two documents: the vehicle registration card (or book) and the owner’s National Identity Card (CNIC).

They said that no additional forms, photocopies, or files are needed. If both documents are valid, the M-Tag is issued on the spot. Citizens missing any required document will need to return with the correct paperwork, they said.

Officials noted that timely registration will not only streamline the traffic system but also reduce rush and delays at toll plazas.
