M-Tag mandatory for motorway travel post Dec 31

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have announced that from December 31, 2023, motor vehicles will be required to be equipped with an M-Tag to gain access to the country’s motorways.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has declared the M-Tag mandatory, and vehicles without the tag will face fines, a move that aims to streamline toll collection and traffic flow.

Major routes including the Peshawar-Islamabad-Lahore Motorway (M1), Pindi Bhattian-Multan Motorway (M4), Hakla-D.I Khan Motorway (M14), Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway (M3), Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M5), and the Hassanabdal-Mansehra Expressway (E35) will be enforcing this new regulation.

Motorists travelling on these routes must ensure that they have completed their M tag registration to avoid inconvenience and fines.

The NHA and National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) have also issued a travel advisory, particularly in light of recent weather conditions. The advisory is crucial as there have been reports of a motorway accident that remind motorists of the dangers of travelling without proper preparations, especially during foggy conditions. The Motorway M2 Fog update has been specifically highlighted, urging drivers to exercise caution.

The NHMP has advised motorists to use fog lights amidst the rain forecast as well as avoiding non-essential travel to reduce the likelihood of accidents.

To facilitate this, the public is encouraged to reach out to the helpline at 130 before and during travel on the motorways.
