PARIS: Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre Museum, following a series of crises, including a major jewel theft and ongoing labour strikes.
Des Cars stepped down after facing mounting criticism over a high-profile heist in October, during which jewels valued at around $102 million were stolen and have yet to be recovered. The incident exposed serious weaknesses in the museum’s security systems.
In a statement, Macron’s office described her resignation as a responsible decision, emphasising the need for stability and renewed leadership as the museum moves forward with key security upgrades and modernisation efforts.
The Louvre has also been dealing with repeated staff strikes since December over pay and working conditions, leading to frequent closures. Additional challenges have included water leaks and a large-scale ticket fraud investigation.
Critics, including government auditors, have raised concerns about the museum’s priorities, highlighting limited investment in security and infrastructure, while significant funds were directed toward acquiring new artworks and post-pandemic reopening initiatives.
