Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes Turkey–Syria border region

WEB DESK: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the Turkey–Syria border region on Wednesday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, with tremors felt across a wide area on both sides of the frontier.

Shaking from the quake was reported across several towns and cities in the border region, with seismic waves extending into surrounding areas due to the region’s complex and heavily faulted geology.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Authorities in Turkey and Syria had not yet issued detailed statements on the impact of the earthquake.

The region lies on multiple active fault lines and is prone to frequent seismic activity, including powerful earthquakes in recent years that have caused widespread destruction and loss of life.
