Mahmood Khan Achakzai urges stronger National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: Newly appointed Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Monday called for the National Assembly to become a true centre of power, stressing that lawmakers should focus on public welfare rather than politics.

Speaking in the lower house of parliament, Achakzai said that ethical conduct must guide members’ actions and praised the role of the armed forces and police in maintaining security.

He reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles, stating he has never taken money for votes or broken his oath of office.

The opposition leader also highlighted national challenges, foreign policy concerns, and the need to strengthen parliamentary procedures and constitutional reforms to ensure the assembly serves the people effectively.

Speaking to lawmakers, Achakzai said, “This house should be a source of strength, regardless of which party is in government. Whenever you raise issues for the welfare of the people, we will support you.”

Quoting the holy Quran, he stressed adherence to ethical conduct saying: “Do not support evil deeds,” and called on members to avoid actions they would not do in front of their families. He also highlighted the need to protect personal and institutional integrity.

Achakzai reaffirmed his long-standing political stance, saying he had never taken money in exchange for votes and had never broken his oath of office.

“This country belongs to 250 million people; let the people speak and learn,” he said.

He criticised Pakistan’s current challenges, noting that while other nations have progressed, Pakistan faces difficulties.

He praised the strength of the armed forces and police, saying no one can commit abductions due to their presence.

He also referenced past actions against terrorism and expressed concerns over humanitarian issues, including the removal of people from Tirah in winter.

On foreign policy, Achakzai called on the UN Secretary-General to address Pakistan’s concerns about Afghanistan and criticised sanctions imposed on Iran.

He also said that decisions regarding sending troops to Palestine should be brought to the assembly for discussion.

The opposition leader addressed parliamentary procedures, including recent constitutional amendments, calling for their use to strengthen the assembly rather than for political manoeuvring.

He suggested resolving child-related legal cases and urged the assembly to pass or revisit resolutions regarding the PTI founder.

Reflecting on his political history, Achakzai noted his good relations with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, emphasising his commitment to respecting the sanctity of votes and constitutional processes.

He concluded by reiterating the opposition’s readiness to support measures that strengthen the parliament and uphold democracy.
