MAKKAH: A massive new urban project called King Salman Gate is set to reshape Makkah’s central area, promising to improve access to the Grand Mosque and enrich the experience of millions of visitors and pilgrims.
Announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the project spans about 12 million square metres near the Grand Mosque, making it one of the largest planned developments in the holy city. The initiative aims to modernise the area while keeping Makkah’s traditional identity intact.
A new vision for the holy city
The mixed-use project will include residential, hospitality, commercial and cultural areas, offering around 900,000 indoor and outdoor prayer spaces. Its design connects directly with public transport systems to make travelling to and from the Grand Mosque more convenient.
Beyond its scale, the project carries strong cultural and historical value. Around 19,000 square metres of heritage sites will be restored and preserved, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s effort to protect Makkah’s legacy while introducing modern infrastructure and sustainable design.
Part of Vision 2030 goals
The King Salman Gate project is expected to play a role in achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by driving economic activity and job creation. Authorities estimate it will generate over 300,000 jobs by 2036, supporting both the local community and the wider national economy.
RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), is developing the project. The firm focuses on sustainable urban development and improving the experience of residents and pilgrims around the Grand Mosque.
While still in its early stages, the King Salman Gate project is viewed as a key step towards shaping Makkah’s future, one that connects its deep spiritual roots with a modern, well-planned urban landscape.
