KARACHI: Following an attempt to escape Malir Jail by nearly 200 inmates, it has been revealed that the prisoners were trying to leave owing to the panic caused by earthquake tremors on Tuesday. This was conveyed by DIG Sindh Prisons with Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah reiterating the same.

Officials revealed that prisoners in an overcrowded barrack tried to break down walls and push open the main gate after being frightened by seismic activity. Most of those who briefly escaped were identified as drug addicts, taking advantage of reduced nighttime security presence.

“Security personnel resorted to aerial firing to deter the inmates and prevent a mass breakout,” the DIG Prisons stated. By late night, over 70 escapees had been recaptured in a swift operation, while Malir district police continue search efforts for remaining fugitives.

CM Murad Ali Shah on termed the Malir jailbreak attempt following earthquake tremors as “deeply concerning,” while revealing his administration was coordinating with seismic monitoring centers to verify the geological activity.

“The prisoners panicked when they felt tremors, leading to chaos,” CM Shah told reporters, confirming that police, jail authorities and Frontier Corps personnel had swiftly responded to control the situation.

The chief minister disclosed his office was collecting official data about the reported earthquake, stating: “We’re in contact with the seismic monitoring center to get accurate information.” He acknowledged the coordinated response by law enforcement agencies that prevented a major security breach.

CM Shah’s statement suggests the provincial government may review jail security measures, particularly regarding natural disaster preparedness in correctional facilities. No casualties were reported during the incident.
