Man arrested over alleged inappropriate conduct towards Australia women's players

ISLAMABAD: A man has been arrested for alleged inappropriately touch of two Australia women’s cricket team players, who were participating in Thursday’s ENG-W versus AUS-W match, Indian police said.

The two players were reportedly walking to a café about 800 metres from their hotel when a motorcyclist approached them. The man allegedly stalked, harassed, and molested the players before fleeing the scene.

“The security officers of the Australian women’s cricket team filed a complaint stating that two members of the team faced inappropriate behaviour,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya. “An FIR was registered, and the accused was identified and arrested following an intensive operation.”

Cricket Australia confirmed that the players were inappropriately touched by the motorcyclist. Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described it as a “deeply regrettable and isolated incident.”

According to Indian police, the accused has been charged under Sections 74 and 78 of the criminal code, which relate to assault or the use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, and stalking, respectively.

“We appreciate the swift and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused,” Cricket Australia said. “The law will take its due course to ensure justice is served. We will also review and strengthen our safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.”
