Man killed by firing in Karachi

KARACHI: A man lost his life during an firing incident in the Gizri area of Karachi on Wednesday.

The victim was reportedly waiting for someone for almost 15 to 20 minutes before the attack occurred.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South confirmed that the victim was in contact with someone on the phone at the time of the incident.

The attack occurred when two gunmen arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the victim. The police launched an investigation in the murder, with the SSP South stating that efforts were underway to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the senseless shooting.

Karachi is Pakistan’s largest city with a population of over 18 million. It has long struggled with violent crime and even gang violence.

The city has been plagued by gang-related iolence, targeted killings, and incidents of extortin.

The proliferation of firearms in 1980s during the influx of millions of Afghan refugees and rise of smuggling exacerbated the situation in the former capital.

According to recent statistics, Karachi has witnessed a huge number of homicides, with many cases linked to organised crime and political rivalries.

The issue of gun violence in Pakistan has been a major concern since the 1980s. Estimates suggest that there are million of unregistered firearms in circulation .

The easy availability of weapons has made it difficult for the law enforcement agencies to maintain order and ensure public safer. Corruption within the law enforcement is also very common.

Within Karachi specifically, the issues posed by gun violence are compounded by socioeconomic factors, including poverty, unemployment and lack of access to quality education.
