US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that several countries may send warships to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, although he did not provide details about which nations would take part in it if asked or so. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for global oil shipments, and tensions around it have raised concerns about disruptions to international trade.
Taking to his account on Truth Social, President Trump said that many countries affected by Iran’s attempt to close the strait would likely join the US in protecting the waterway. He mentioned countries such as China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom as possible participants in a joint naval effort.
Trump also warned that the United States could take strong military action if necessary. He said the U.S. would continue targeting Iranian boats and vessels and carry out strikes along the shoreline if efforts to keep the shipping route open were challenged.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment about whether any countries had officially agreed to send ships. Analysts say international naval cooperation would be important to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the strait.
The comments came after Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, made his first public remarks about the situation. He said Iran would keep the Strait of Hormuz closed to increase pressure on Washington, describing the move as a strategic tool that Tehran should use amid rising tensions with the United States.
