Four-time snooker world champion Mark Selby is rethinking his futre in the sport after suffering a huge defeat in the very first round of the World Snooker Championship against a debutant Joe O'Connor.

Mark Selby is renowned for his intimidating gameplay within the world of snooker. However, on Monday he suffered a crushing defeat with a 10-6 loss to newcomer Joe O’Connor.

O’Connor’s aggressive approach kept Selby on the back foot from the opening frame, allowing O’Connor to establish a 7-2 lead after the first session.

Despite a brief spark of resistance and a comeback attempt from Selby, the young debutant ultimately emerged victorious.

The defeat has utterly devastated Shelby. In an emotional interview, the world champion stated he is rethinking his career in the world of snooker, hinting at a retirement. He described his performance as ‘pathetic’, while admitting the toll the game has taken on him mentally.

The dismal performance by a world champion has been attributed by many by his wife’s battle with cancer. Shelby stated he needed to prioritise the well-being of his family.

Meanwhile, the winner O’Connor celebrated his victory  while also acknowledging Selby’s influence on him as a great player. He hoped that Selby would not retire.
