Maryam Nawaz announces subsidy for transport sector

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday announced a subsidy for goods transport and free public transporter amid rising fuel prices.

In a post on social media platform X, Maryam said global oil price pressures, driven by international conflicts, made fuel price increases unavoidable.

She said that targeted monthly subsidies would be provided to registered transport operators, including Rs70,000 for goods transport, Rs80,000 for large vehicles, and Rs100,000 for public service buses.

She urged transporters across Punjab not to pass on the burden of rising fuel costs to passengers and consumers.

The government would closely monitor the situation and ensure effective regulation so that the relief reaches the public, she added.

In a separate message, Maryam said that public transport would be free for people in Punjab as long as the oil crisis persists.

She said passengers would no longer need to purchase tickets for the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, or Green Electric Bus, and encouraged citizens to use public transport for a more affordable and sustainable commute.
