LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif formally inaugurated the province’s first “Mobile Police Station and Licencing Unit project”, aimed at providing police and licencing services to citizens at their doorstep.
The mobile unit will offer FIR registration, learner and regular driving licences, renewal, international licences, and services for women and educational institutions.
Inspecting the mobile unit, the chief minister handed over the keys to the officers concerned and interacted with staff members, inquiring about the system’s working.
She directed them to deal with citizens in a courteous and compassionate manner.
Maryam Nawaz was briefed that 33 mobile police stations and licencing units will operate across various districts of Punjab, while seven “Pink” Mobile Police Stations and Licencing Units have been specially prepared to facilitate women, staffed entirely by female police officers.
A travel schedule for the mobile stations will also be issued to ensure the public is informed in advance about their arrival in different areas.
The initiative is designed to improve accessibility, transparency, and efficiency in policing and public service delivery across Punjab.
Open court for grievances
In line with the CM Punjab’s approach, DIG Investigation Lahore Syed Zeeshan Raza held an open court at his office to address citizens’ grievances. A large number of people, including overseas Pakistanis, attended to raise complaints related to cases of embezzlement, kidnapping, theft, and other criminal investigations.
The DIG listened to each complaint in detail and issued immediate directions for their resolution. Several cases were referred to the Change of Investigation Board over concerns of poor inquiry, and show-cause notices were issued to negligent officers. Additional inquiries were also ordered by the DIG’s office to ensure fair investigations. Raza directed divisional SPs to promptly redress complaints and personally contacted them to expedite action. Emphasising that safeguarding citizens’ lives and property is the police’s top priority, he instructed officers to maintain professionalism and courtesy, assuring that his office remains open to the public for assistance at all times.
Electric bus service
Earlier in September, Maryam Nawaz inaugurated electric bus service in Wazirabad as part of a broader initiative aimed at providing public transport to people across the province while also curbing carbon emissions to tackle the climate change challenge which is affecting Pakistan at an alarming pace.
“This is a gift for the people of Wazirabad,” Maryam told a gathering in Wazirabad — one of the regions affected by raging floodwaters of Chenab.
Earlier, Maryam attended the launching ceremony of the service in Mianwali after the China-made electric buses were first introduced on a route, which is one of the many planned, in Lahore in February this year.
The Punjab government has opted to launch electric buses in different cities and towns in phases.
