CBS has unveiled its 2026–2027 fall primetime schedule, but a major shift involving two of its biggest shows, Matlock and Ghosts, is drawing the most attention.
Both series have been pushed out of the fall lineup and will instead return during the midseason window, despite remaining strong performers for the network.
New shows step in as CBS reshuffles lineup
Taking their place are a slate of new titles, including NCIS: New York, a spinoff joining the long-running NCIS franchise. The new series is set to air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
Also joining the fall schedule are drama Cupertino and comedy Eternally Yours, as CBS looks to refresh its lineup while maintaining a strong base of returning content.
Network executives said the decision to move Matlock and Ghosts reflects the depth of the schedule, allowing the network to spread major titles across the season.
Returning hits, cancellations and a wider strategy
Much of the schedule will still be anchored by returning favourites such as FBI, Survivor, The Amazing Race and Tracker.
At the same time, CBS has made room for new programming by cancelling DMV and Watson, while long-running sitcom The Neighborhood is set to end after its final season.
Other projects, including Einstein, are also being held for midseason, signalling a broader rollout strategy that staggers key releases throughout the year.
CBS will also continue to rely on major live events, including the MTV Video Music Awards, the Golden Globes and a live special of The Price Is Right, to drive viewership.
With hit shows delayed and new titles stepping in, CBS appears to be betting on a staggered release model to keep audiences engaged beyond the traditional fall season.
