Mattel debuts autistic Barbie doll: All we know about features, place to buy

NEW YORK: American multilateral manufacturing and entertainment company Mattel has unveiled its first autistic Barbie doll.

Mattel, previously known as Mattel Creations, is a multinational toy company based in America, manufacturing and distributing toys for the world, with a loyal fan following of customers.

The latest addition to Barbie’s Fashionistas comes six months after the debut of its first doll with type 1 diabetes.

The US-based entertainment company aims at helping more children “see themselves in Barbie” while encouraging all children to play with dolls that mirror the diversity of the real world.

Autism is a type of neurodiversity that shapes how people live through the experiences they gain by living with others in societies.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says in this respect that autism mainly differs from person to person; however, estimates show that more than one in 100 children is autistic.

For those who were wishing that Mattel would release its first autistic doll are now being informed that the brand is starting on Monday, Jan 12, and they can easily buy it at Mattel Shop and Target.

A debut in Walmart stores nationwide will take place in the month of March, the company said.

The toy has been made in a joint effort with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit disability rights organisation that aims to empower the autistic community.

On its website, Mattel said, “Designed to reflect the world kids see today, this diverse line of Barbie Fashionistas dolls showcases bright and trendy styles that inspire endless storytelling possibilities.”
