Matthew Brown dead at 42: What happened to the ‘Alaskan Bush People’ star?

Matthew Brown, one of the original stars of Discovery’s Alaskan Bush People, has died at the age of 42, leaving fans of the long-running reality series mourning one of its most recognisable faces.

Brown’s death was confirmed after his body was recovered from the Okanogan River in Washington state following a multi-day search effort.

According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, authorities began searching after a caller reported seeing a man sitting in shallow water near the river before watching him drift away in the current. Multiple agencies later joined the search alongside volunteer groups. Brown’s body was eventually found on Saturday by a private search team and identified by the county coroner. Authorities have said the official cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

News of Brown’s death was also shared by members of his family over the weekend.

His brother Noah Brown said he was present when the body was recovered and confirmed that it belonged to Matthew.

“My oldest brother, Matthew Brown, has passed away,” Noah wrote in a message shared on social media.

Bear Brown also addressed the tragedy publicly, asking viewers to show compassion towards the family and be mindful of the comments they leave online during a difficult time.

For many viewers, Matthew Brown was one of the defining figures of Alaskan Bush People during its most popular years.

The Discovery series debuted in 2014 and followed the Brown family as they attempted to live off the grid in remote areas of Alaska. Brown appeared in 79 episodes between 2014 and 2019 and became a central part of the show’s identity as audiences followed the family’s unconventional lifestyle.

As the eldest son of Billy and Ami Brown, he frequently appeared alongside his parents and siblings while navigating the challenges of wilderness living. His outspoken personality and prominent role within the family helped make him one of the show’s most memorable cast members.
