Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman looming Islamabad protest

WEB DESK: The head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, has criticised recent constitutional amendments, claiming they reflect the wishes of powerful individuals rather than the public. He warned that if necessary, he and his supporters will head to Islamabad to protest.

Addressing a Hafiz-e-Quran ceremony at Jamia Islamia in Mardan, Fazal-ur-Rehman said Pakistan, which should symbolise peace, unity, and freedom, has instead turned the constitution into a “plaything” for the elite. He accused the government of undermining provincial rights and vowed to resist any encroachment on them.

“The public’s aspirations are being ignored. The 27th constitutional amendment was passed after securing a two-thirds majority through manipulation and incentives, rather than genuine consensus,” he said, referring to the recent parliamentary vote.

Fazal-ur-Rehman also expressed concern over international issues, pointing to the ongoing violence in Palestine. He criticised US policies under former President Donald Trump, claiming Palestinian blood was being shed, and condemned political leaders in Pakistan, including Shehbaz Sharif, for suggesting Trump should receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

He emphasised that militaristic approaches will not solve problems and urged both Pakistan and Afghanistan to reassess their policies and behaviour in order to foster stability in the region.

His statements reflect growing criticism from opposition parties regarding constitutional changes and foreign policy decisions, signalling potential political tensions in the coming weeks.
