Mayor distances himself from royal encounter amid questions over colonial-era gem

WEB DESK: New York City’s first democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has sparked conversation by suggesting he would have used a private audience with King Charles III to demand the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India.

Speaking at a news conference in the Bronx ahead of the King’s visit to Lower Manhattan on Wednesday, Mamdani clarified that his interaction with the monarch would be limited to a public ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum alongside other elected officials.

However, when questioned about what he might say in a one-on-one setting, the Mayor stated he would “probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor Diamond” according to The New York Times.

A controversial colonial legacy

The 105.6-carat diamond remains one of the most contentious items within the British Crown Jewels, currently housed in the Tower of London.

Historical records indicate the stone was taken from an 11-year-old Indian prince during the 1840s, a period when India was under British colonial rule, and subsequently presented to Queen Victoria.

India has long lobbied for the diamond’s return, viewing it as a symbol of colonial exploitation. Mamdani’s decision to invoke the diamond is seen as consistent with his political identity and personal history.

Personal and political ties to anti-colonialism

The Mayor’s perspective is deeply rooted in his heritage and family background. Born in Uganda another former British colony to Indian parents, Mamdani is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, a prominent scholar of anti-colonialism, and Mira Nair, an award-winning filmmaker known for exploring the colonial experience.

These influences have significantly shaped his political views and his stated goal of uplifting New York City’s working-class residents.

While the meeting between the Mayor and the King remained strictly ceremonial, the comments have once again highlighted the ongoing global debate regarding the repatriation of colonial-era treasures.
