BAHAWALPUR: Famous transgender dancer Mehak Malik and 35 others have been booked for allegedly performing ‘vulgar dances’ during a private wedding function in a village near Mandi Yazman.
According to reports, a case has been registered against Mehak Malik under the Amplifier Act, along with 35 other individuals. However, no arrests have been made so far.
The FIR states that Mehak Malik was invited to perform at a mehndi event in a rural area. She allegedly wore revealing attire and danced to lewd songs.
Several attendees were also accused of showering her with currency notes during the alleged lewd performance.
Police have formally nominated 10 individuals in the case, while 25 others remain unidentified.
It has also emerged that some government employees were present at the event, including a police constable, though none have been named in the case.
Theatre promoting vulgarity to face lifetime ban
Meanwhile, Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari has announced a new theatre policy to curb obscenity in the name of entertainment.
Speaking to culture reporters at Lahore’s Alhamra Art Council, she said that any theatre found promoting vulgarity would be issued three warnings before facing a lifetime ban.
Accompanied by senior officials, including Punjab Council of The Arts (PUCAR) DG Tanveer Majid, Alhamra ED Tauqeer Kazmi, and DGPR Ghulam Saghir Shahid, the minister outlined the government’s vision for promoting family-friendly theatre across the province.
Bukhari said a new law for regulating theatre activities will be introduced next week, while the Punjab Censor Board will also be restructured within a few days. She announced plans for a dedicated family theatre in Alhamra and added that Punjab’s Culture Day will be celebrated on April 17, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expected to attend.
“We want theatre to be a safe and respectful space where families can come together without concern,” she said, warning that any official found supporting indecent activities and vulgar dances would also face strict consequences.
She emphasised that the upcoming theatre policy will be devised in consultation with all stakeholders, adding that Pakistani stage plays hold a unique identity on the world stage.
