Migrants’ bodies in Libya mass graves had gunshot wounds, IOM says

GENEVA: Some of the bodies of migrants found in two mass graves in Libya bore gunshot wounds, the International Organization for Migration said on Monday, adding that one of the sites is thought to contain up to 70 bodies.

“The (IOM) has expressed shock and concern at the discovery of two mass graves in Libya containing the bodies of dozens of migrants, some with gunshot wounds,” it said.

Libya’s security authorities have already recovered at least 28 bodies from the bigger of the two mass graves in the desert of southeast Libya, the attorney general’s office said on Sunday.

Earlier, a boat carrying around 65 passengers capsized near Marsa Dela port, northwest of Zawiya city in Libya, the Pakistani Embassy in Tripoli confirmed.

According to a statement from the Foreign Office, the embassy is working to determine the identities of Pakistani nationals affected by the tragedy.

Following the incident, a team from the Pakistani Embassy was immediately dispatched to Zawiya Hospital to assist local authorities in identifying the deceased.

Efforts are also underway to gather further details about Pakistani passengers on board. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated its Crisis Management Unit to monitor the situation closely.

Morocco boat accident

On January 15, 44 Pakistanis were reported dead in a boat accident. However, local authorities found only 13 bodies, said Pakistani Embassy in Morocco. Earlier this month MOFA had confirmed that 13 bodies from the Moroccan boat tragedy has been identified as Pakistanis. The diplomatic sources said that the identification of 13 bodies has been completed.
