Mike Tomlin makes shock NBC move after Steelers exit but is he done coaching?

Mike Tomlin

Mike Tomlin is heading to television after stepping down from the Pittsburgh Steelers, with reports saying he will join NBC’s Football Night in America as a lead analyst, a move that is already raising questions about whether his coaching career is truly over.

Sources told The Athletic that Tomlin, long viewed as one of the most compelling voices in football, is set to take a prominent role on the network’s Sunday night pregame show.

NBC overhaul brings in a major name

The move comes as NBC reshapes its NFL coverage, with longtime analyst Tony Dungy exiting after 17 seasons.

Tomlin is expected to join host Maria Taylor alongside Jason Garrett and Devin McCourty, as the network looks to refresh its on-air lineup with more current star power.

NBC is also reportedly reviewing the roles of several existing contributors as part of a broader shake-up.

A long-anticipated jump to TV

At 54, Tomlin has been on broadcasters’ radar for years, thanks to his Super Bowl-winning pedigree, deep understanding of the game and distinctive style of communication.

NBC ultimately secured him despite reported interest from Fox, which had also been seen as a strong contender.

End of a remarkable Steelers run

Tomlin stepped down after 19 seasons with the Steelers, a tenure that included 13 playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory in 2009.

He famously never recorded a losing season, though his final years were marked by playoff struggles as the team searched for stability at quarterback following Ben Roethlisberger’s later career.

The big question still hanging

While the move to NBC marks a major shift, it does not necessarily signal the end of Tomlin’s time on the sidelines.

His predecessor, Bill Cowher, made a similar transition to television and never returned to coaching. But Tomlin’s situation remains open-ended, and a future return cannot be ruled out.

For now, NBC has landed one of the NFL’s most sought-after figures. Whether it is a long-term move or simply the next chapter before a comeback remains the question driving the buzz around Tomlin.
