WEB DESK: A missile has struck a helipad inside the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad, according to Iraqi security officials, in the latest escalation of tensions surrounding the fortified diplomatic district.
According to Al Jazeera, the projectile landed within the heavily guarded Green Zone, an enclave in central Baghdad that houses key government buildings and numerous foreign missions. Two Iraqi security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief the media, confirmed that the strike occurred within the embassy grounds.
Although the embassy has yet to issue an official statement, videos circulating on social media shortly after the incident appeared to show plumes of smoke rising from within the diplomatic compound.
Escalating tensions and threats
The strike comes amid a surge in threats from Iran-aligned armed groups operating inside Iraq, which have repeatedly vowed to target American facilities in retaliation for recent events in the region. The atmosphere has grown particularly volatile following the reported assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of Iran, who was said to have been killed alongside members of his family in a joint US-Israeli air strike at the outset of the current confrontation.
Analysts believe the missile strike may represent a direct act of reprisal for that operation. Local reports have also suggested that certain militant factions recently offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the whereabouts of US diplomatic personnel.
Security concerns and immediate aftermath
There has been no official confirmation regarding casualties, and it remains unclear whether anyone was injured in the attack. Early reports indicate that a radar installation within the compound may have been destroyed, although the full scale of structural damage has yet to be assessed.
In response to the heightened threat environment, some diplomatic staff are believed to have sought temporary refuge in civilian residences outside the compound to reduce the risk of being directly targeted.
Iraqi security forces have since sealed off areas surrounding the Green Zone, bracing for the possibility of further incidents as the situation continues to unfold.
