MIT pro-Palestinian protest: Defiance amid campus tensions


MASSACHUSETTS: Pro-Palestinian students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continued their protest despite police orders to disperse on Monday.

The protesting students breached the fencing to encircle remaining tents at an encampment where pro-Palestinian protesters had embanked. Protesters at the prestigious United States (US) university demanded an end to violence in Gaza and the university’s direct ties to the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IDF).

The protesters briefly blocked the Massachusetts Avenue as well. However, tensions eased later as law enforcement presence decreased and no arrests were reported by Monday night, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The university’s administration has repeatedly been issuing warnings of immediate academic suspension for students who are still protesting. Meanwhile, counterprotests by pro-Israeli groups heightened tensions at the site of protest.

Pro-Palestine protests have erupted across universities in the United States, as students advocate for divestment and the cessation of ties between their institutions and entities associated with Israel.

Columbia University was forced to cancel is main gradation ceremony on Monday, while pro-Palestinian protesters at University of Michigan were able to briefly disrupt the graduation ceremony on Saturday.
