Mohsin Naqvi, Iranian counterpart discuss bilateral ties, regional situation in Tehran

TEHRAN: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni in Tehran on Monday, with the two sides discussing bilateral relations, the latest regional situation and ongoing cooperation between their ministries.

Naqvi arrived in Tehran earlier in the day on an official visit and was received at the airport by Momeni. The two ministers later held talks at the Iranian Interior Ministry.

According to Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, the meeting reviewed progress in cooperation between the interior ministries of the two countries in various areas and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral coordination.

The two sides also exchanged views on the latest developments in the region and matters of mutual interest.

Momeni appreciated Pakistan’s continued efforts to promote peace and stability in the region and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts towards regional peace, according to an official statement reported by Radio Pakistan.

Momeni also described his recent visit to Pakistan as productive and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would be further strengthened. Naqvi said Pakistan and Iran would continue working to deepen bilateral cooperation and promote regional stability.

Iranian state-run Mehr news agency reported that the talks focused on bilateral relations and cooperation, including the implementation of agreements previously reached between the two countries.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions in the wider region, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States and attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group on Saudi targets. Pakistani officials had earlier indicated that regional developments would be discussed during Naqvi’s visit.

However, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported before Naqvi’s arrival that his visit was not related to the exchange of messages between Iran and the United States. It said Naqvi was neither carrying a message to Tehran nor expected to relay an Iranian message to Washington, with the discussions instead focused on bilateral relations and cooperation.

The visit is part of Pakistan’s continuing diplomatic engagement with Iran as Islamabad seeks to promote regional peace and stability.
