WEB DESK: Moonis Alvi has submitted his resignation as chief executive officer of K-Electric (KE), marking the end of an eight-year tenure at the helm of the country’s largest power utility. The resignation has been accepted by the company’s Board of Directors, setting in motion a formal process to appoint a new chief executive.
Sources familiar with the development said the board, chaired by Mark Gerard Skelton, has approved Alvi’s departure and has already shortlisted potential candidates to take over the role.
Three candidates shortlisted for top job
According to sources, three individuals have been shortlisted for the CEO position. All candidates are Karachi-based and bring extensive experience across the energy and financial sectors.
The current board is expected to conduct interviews with the shortlisted candidates and forward its recommendations to the incoming board. A meeting of the Board of Directors is scheduled for next week, while board elections are likely to take place during Ramazan.
The final decision on the appointment of the new CEO will rest with the newly constituted board.
Interim phase and board composition
K-Electric’s board currently consists of 13 seats, though three positions have remained vacant for a prolonged period. Following Alvi’s resignation, the number of active board members has dropped to nine.
Sources said the leadership transition has created uncertainty within the organisation, with senior management expressing concerns about strategic continuity during the interim period.
Legal controversy and recent clearance
Alvi’s resignation comes months after a prolonged legal dispute linked to a workplace harassment complaint. In July 2025, the Sindh Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace had ordered his removal from office and imposed a fine of Rs2.5 million, concluding that he was involved in workplace harassment.
However, in February 2026, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori set aside the ombudsperson’s order after hearing a representation against the decision. In his ruling, the governor observed that the material on record primarily related to administrative and professional matters and did not sufficiently substantiate the allegations.
The order also noted that the decision to terminate the complainant’s employment had been taken by the Board HR Committee rather than by the CEO directly, and that the earlier ruling did not adequately assess the available evidence.
Professional background and tenure at KE
Moonis Alvi was appointed CEO of K-Electric in June 2018. During his tenure, the utility undertook investments across various segments of the energy value chain, including the development of a 900-megawatt RLNG-based power plant.
Alvi joined K-Electric in 2008 and previously served as its chief financial officer. He also held positions as company secretary and head of treasury.
A fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan, Alvi has over three decades of experience in finance, capital restructuring and financial planning.
What lies ahead
With Alvi’s departure now formalised, attention has shifted to the leadership transition at K-Electric amid ongoing operational and governance challenges in Pakistan’s power sector.
The appointment of a new CEO is expected to be a key priority for the incoming board as it seeks to stabilise the organisation and chart its next phase of leadership.
