WEB DESK: Tensions between Moscow and Kyiv have reached a fever pitch as both nations trade threats ahead of Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations on 9 May.
The Kremlin has warned that any attempt by Ukraine to disrupt the commemorations will met with an “inevitable” retaliatory strike, further heightening fears of a significant escalation in violence across both capitals this weekend, according to The New York Times.
Scaling back the pageantry
In an unusual admission of vulnerability, Moscow has announced plans to scale back its traditional military parade.
Officials acknowledged that the decision stems from concerns over potential long-range Ukrainian strikes targeting the heart of the Russian capital.
The Russian foreign ministry has gone as far as urging foreign diplomats to evacuate Kyiv, advising embassies to take the recommendation to “leave in a timely manner” with the utmost seriousness.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov stated that enhanced security measures are now in place, specifically accounting for threats posed by the “Kyiv regime.”
A war of rhetoric and drones
The escalation comes as the conflict enters its fifth year, with the symbolic weight of Victory Day—which marks the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany serving as a flashpoint for both sides.
While Russia continues its deadly strikes on Ukrainian cities, Kyiv has increasingly mounted its own long-range campaigns into Russian territory.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has alluded to potential disruptions in recent statements, as Ukraine seeks to challenge Russian air superiority.
With heavy military equipment notably absent from this year’s parade line-up, the focus remains on whether the weekend will pass peacefully or mark a bloody new chapter in the ongoing war.
