Mufti Fazlur Rehman, son shot dead in North Waziristan

ISLAMABAD: Police in North Waziristan tribal district said Tuesday that gunmen shot dead Mufti Fazlur Rehman and his son in a targeted attack in Miranshah.

According to police and locals, Mufti Fazlur Rehman, who is the son of district Khatib Qari Muhammad Roman, was attacked by unknown assailants in Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan.

The attackers also gunned down Rehman’s son Noor Rehman.

This is the second assassination of ‘ulema’ in Waziristan in two days.

“The assassinated father and son were residents of Darpakhel tehsil. They were attacked at 09:58 am,” police said.

Witnesses said the gunmen, riding a motorbike, fled after the attack.

No group claimed responsibility in the volatile region.

Police said a case has been registered against unknown assailants and an investigation is underway.

Target killing in North Waziristan

On August 11, unknown gunmen shot and killed a prominent religious scholar, Maulana Sanaullah, in an armed incident in South Waziristan.

No group claimed responsibility for the assassination of Maulana Sanaullah.

According to police data this is the 16th incident of targeted attacks in North Waziristan this year, and there were 37 incidents there in 2024, in which more than 50 elders, youth, religious scholars, civil society activists, and even government officials were killed.

Two killed, 10 injured in Wana bomb blast

In May, an explosion targeted the vehicle of local JUI-F leader Maulana Noorullah in the lower South Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Maulana escaped unhurt.

On March 14 this year, a bomb exploded at a mosque in South Waziristan district during Friday prayers, injuring JUI district Chief Abdullah Nadeem and three others.
