Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen announces exit from PSL franchise

ISLAMABAD: Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has announced that he will not be renewing his ownership of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise.

In a tweet, Tareen said he was bidding farewell to the team he has owned for seven years.

He appeared to take a subtle dig at PSL management and differences that developed between him and other franchise owners, stating, “I would rather lose the team standing on my feet than run it from my knees.”

“Being part of this team has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” he said. “I love the fans, I love this team, and I absolutely love representing South Punjab — something my late uncle Alamgir Tareen was especially proud of.”

He reflected on the values he instilled in players and staff every season. “I told them that the fans will forgive you if you lose, but they will never forgive you if you stop fighting. That mindset has shaped everything we have done, both on and off the field,” Tareen said.

Despite financial losses over the years, Tareen added that he never considered walking away. “The Sultans have always meant more to me than just numbers. And I have always been willing to go as far as needed to protect it,” he said.

He acknowledged that his approach may not appeal to everyone, but insisted on staying true to his principles. “I have always been honest and spoken my mind. I never learned how to play it safe or just play along. And if staying means compromising those principles, there is only one choice I can make,” Tareen said.

He concluded his message with a note to the fans: “This team has always been much more than its owner. It belongs to you and to South Punjab. Whoever takes control of the Sultans next, please support them with the same passion. You can count on me to be in the stands supporting them too.”
